I am honoured to welcome you to Rideau Hall, which stands on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe people.
They have served as stewards of this land for thousands of years.
Looking around this room, I believe every honouree here understands what it means to care for and protect this land.
You chose to serve your country.
You felt called to something greater than yourself.
And through your extraordinary work, you have made a lasting contribution to Canada.
The Order of Military Merit recognizes your distinctive merit and exceptional service.
Service that should never be taken for granted.
The world has become increasingly aware of the risks involved in a military career.
As global change accelerates and the international order shifts, your commitment to Canada grows stronger.
Yours is a complex and heavy burden, but you carry it with pride.
It is also carried by the families who stand behind you.
Their love, support and understanding are essential to your well-being and your ability to serve.
Let us take a moment to acknowledge them-and thank them.
Today also marks the beginning of Veterans' Week in Canada.
In the days leading up to Remembrance Day, we will keep the members of Canada's Armed Forces-both past and present-in our thoughts.
We will reflect on the sacrifices they made for us, and for generations to come.
As commander-in-chief, and on behalf of all Canadians, I thank all of you for protecting our country.
Thank you for safeguarding our freedom, peace and security-both at home and around the world.
Enjoy today's ceremony.
Miigwetch. Nakurmiik. Merci. Thank you.
