WNC Celebrates HEPP Graduates at Northern Nevada Correctional Center

Western Nevada College celebrated the achievements of 16 graduates from its Higher Education in Prison Program (HEPP) at Northern Nevada Correctional Center (NNCC) during a commencement ceremony on Tuesday, June 9.

The graduates earned a combination of associate degrees and certificates, marking significant educational milestones and demonstrating a commitment to personal growth, academic excellence and career readiness.

Eleven graduates completed degree programs, including two Associate of Arts degrees, three Associate of General Studies degrees and six Associate of Applied Science degrees in Welding. In addition, nine of the degree recipients earned academic honors by achieving grade-point averages of 3.50 or higher, and five of those completing degrees also earned Certificates of Achievement.

Five students completed Certificates of Achievement in Automotive Mechanics, while six earned Certificates of Achievement in Welding.

The Higher Education in Prison Program provides incarcerated individuals with opportunities to pursue postsecondary education, equipping them with valuable skills and credentials that can support successful reentry into their communities and the workforce.

"Hearing the student speakers express the value of pursuing a college education while incarcerated illustrates how deeply the experience can impact them," said Deb Conrad, AMPED (Apprenticeships, Military-Connected/Veterans, Prison Education) Director. "Becoming more career ready is just one part of their journey. Along the way, they begin to recognize that they have a voice, agency, and worth that extends beyond the classroom. If they carry that with them when they leave - along with a degree or certificate - they are better prepared for success in work, life, and family."

Western Nevada College President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe presided over the ceremony and commended the graduates for their dedication and perseverance. Joining the celebration were representatives from the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents, Conrad, HEPP Academic Support Specialist Dr. Kim DesRoches, members of WNC's executive leadership team, and faculty who teach within the correctional facility. Northern Nevada Correctional Center was represented by Warden John Henley and Deputy Director William Quenga.

President Dalpe reflected on the significance of their accomplishments and the opportunities that lie ahead.

"Your accomplishments represent not only academic achievement, but personal growth, accountability and a commitment to building new opportunities for yourselves and those who depend on you," President Dalpe said. "As you move forward with your degree or certificate, know that you are equipped with knowledge, skills and confidence that can open doors and create positive change."

The ceremony underscored the transformative power of education and highlighted the role of the Higher Education in Prison Program in helping students develop the skills necessary for meaningful employment, lifelong learning and successful transition into the community.

Through programs such as HEPP, Western Nevada College continues its mission of expanding access to higher education and creating pathways to success for students from all backgrounds.
