ICYMI: Ranking Member Shaheen Blasts President Trump’s Fake Deadlines for Russia in Interviews with BBC and CNN and New Video

WASHINGTON - This week, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, pressed President Trump to finally get tough with Vladimir Putin as he continues to let the Kremlin cross one deadline after another - including one today - with no consequences.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Democrats released a video compilation of President Trump's multiple deadlines for Russia to end their unprovoked war against Ukraine. Ranking Member Shaheen also conducted interviews with BBC World News America and CNN where she emphasized the need for Congress to step in and force Putin to the negotiating table.

Key quotes from Ranking Member Shaheen:

  • BBC: "And the president has, on at least six occasions, given deadlines to Vladimir Putin for actions to end the war in Ukraine and Putin has crossed those and nothing has happened. The president needs to take action. He needs to support the Blumenthal-Graham sanctions bill in the Senate. We need to get that passed. And he needs to provide the equipment and support that Ukraine needs to conduct this war. And on that, Graham-Blumenthal bill, that sanctions bill, there's been broad bipartisan support for that for months now."

  • BBC: "I would think that this would give an additional tool for the president to use with Vladimir Putin. Why he's been reluctant to endorse a bill that has over 80 bipartisan co-sponsors is beyond me."

  • CNN: "President Trump has now allowed Vladimir Putin to blow through seven deadlines that he has set since he came into office. And he's continuing to allow Vladimir Putin to play him. The most obvious example was at the summit in Alaska, where he got virtually nothing from Vladimir Putin. And what we've seen is more people killed in Ukraine because of President Trump's failure to act on something that he said he was going to be focused on."

  • CNN: "The only thing that Vladimir Putin understands is strength and pressure. We need to fund the Ukrainians in terms of the military hardware they need. We need to provide the support to help them keep going in this fight. We need to pass the Graham-Blumenthal sanctions bill that has over 80 sponsors in the Senate to really put pressure on Russia to come to the table to negotiate a peace deal."
