The Albany County Traffic Safety Program has been hosting free child safety seat check events for over 20 years to help parents and caregivers protect their kids in motor vehicles. Throughout the year, our team conducts inspections to help ensure that safety sets are installed correctly and are appropriate for the child's age and size, and if not, we help to replace them. The program is focused on equity and access, providing new child safety seats, at no cost to families that might otherwise face financial barriers to replacing or upgrading seats.
In 2025, there were a total of 455 car seats inspected at both the Albany County Fitting Station and public events. Of those checked, a total of 85 were replaced for being either expired, recalled, damaged, or otherwise inappropriate for the child. Albany County also distributed 467 car seats to low-income households and those who have children with special needs.
"Every parent wants to know their child is as safe as possible on the road. Seeing stronger numbers from our 2025 child safety seat checks tells me this effort is working and that parents are taking these lessons to heart. This is about practical, commonsense safety, meeting families where they are, and giving them the tools they need to protect their children every single day," said Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy.
