Is Bloom Energy Stock Stronger Than It Looks

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Bloom Energy (BE) sells fuel cell systems to sites that need their own power, such as data centers. Buyers of the stock may be betting on that business. Bloom posted losses for years, yet it earned $518 million over the last twelve months. The stock fell 36.5% in the month to November 6, against a 4.9% fall for the S&P 500, and that gap is the puzzle. So is Bloom stronger than that fall suggests? The answer starts with how big its system sales have become.

Most Of Bloom Energy's Sales Now Come From Systems

Product revenue was $1.07 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 179% from a year earlier, management said on the October 22 call. This revenue measures the systems delivered to and accepted by customers. Those product sales made up 87% of the quarter's revenue, so service and installation work is now a small part of the business.

Management said the power grid is overwhelmed by the power needs of data centers, and broad swaths of the electricity market are now heading toward power made on site for the same grid limits that pushed the big cloud companies. At Nebius in New Jersey, Bloom had its first block of power ready two months after its fuel cells won planning approval.

Bloom is also earning more on each system. Management put the product gross margin at 38.4% on its own adjusted measure, an increase of 2.5 percentage points from a year earlier. This reflected both pricing strength and cost reductions, management said. Over the twelve months to September 2026, total revenue more than doubled to $3.83 billion.

Why Did Bloom Energy Use Cash In Q3 2026?

Management said Bloom used cash because it built inventory for future deliveries and was still waiting to be paid for some systems. Third-quarter cash from operations was an outflow of $27 million, even though net income was $250 million. Management explained that billing follows contract milestones, so the cash can arrive in a later quarter than the revenue.

That gap matters for a stock priced at 98.5 times earnings, against 21.8 for the S&P 500. Buyers at that price appear to expect the profit to turn into cash. The profit did turn into cash over the full twelve months, with free cash flow of $437 million. The $181 million of free cash that went out in the third quarter is also small beside the $2.56 billion of cash and short-term investments Bloom held at the end of September, though its total debt was slightly larger at $2.78 billion.

Bloom has only partly shown that its profit keeps turning into cash. Management said it expects to keep investing in working capital to support growth, so some cash may keep arriving later than the profit. It also said those timing differences even out over time.

What Could Slow Bloom Energy's System Sales?

By management's own account, the timing of a few large deliveries is the nearest risk. Bloom raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion. Management said where Bloom lands in that range will be set by the timing of a small number of deliveries around year end.

Cost is the other risk. Management held its full-year gross margin outlook at about 34% on its adjusted measure even as it raised the revenue outlook. Bloom faces some near-term cost from ramping new production lines and expediting deliveries, management said.

A holder also faces deep falls when markets turn. Bloom stock fell 45% in the 2022 inflation shock, against 24% for the S&P 500 ETF.

The argument for Bloom is its system sales. On the third quarter's numbers, those sales look stronger than the stock's fall over the past month suggests, though the cash from those sales has lagged the profit. So fourth-quarter product revenue is the figure to watch when the company reports, expected in February 2027.
