The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced it will conduct a high-visibility seat belt enforcement project November 5 through 30. As part of the national "Make It Click" campaign, officers will increase enforcement efforts across Lincoln, reminding drivers that buckling up is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect themselves and their passengers.
Officers will conduct targeted enforcement throughout the city, focusing on periods when seat belt use may be lower, including evenings, weekends, and during the Thanksgiving holiday. The goal is not simply to issue citations, but to increase awareness, encourage responsible driving habits, and prevent avoidable tragedies on our roads.
Despite ongoing efforts to improve road safety, seat belt use remains a significant concern in Nebraska. According to the 2025 Nebraska Seat Belt Use Survey, only 81.7% of drivers and passengers observed were wearing seat belts. Although this represents an improvement over previous years, Nebraska continues to fall short of the national seat belt use rate of 91.3%.
The consequences of failing to buckle up can be devastating. In 2025, Nebraska recorded ro236 traffic fatalities, including 70 individuals who were not wearing seat belts. National safety data consistently demonstrates that seat belts save lives, reducing the risk of fatal injury by approximately 45% for front-seat passenger vehicle occupants and up to 60% for occupants of light trucks.
The initiative is supported through grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Office.
