NPD Officer-Involved Collision Update

December 12, 2025

The Norman Police Department (NPD) responded to an officer-involved collision Thursday evening. At approximately 7:19 p.m., an NPD officer working a prior incident was struck by a vehicle while outside of his patrol unit on State Highway 9 just west of 108th Avenue SE.

NPD Sgt. Justin Hackbarth was critically injured in the collision. He was transported to OU Medical Center where he remains in critical but stable condition with significant injuries. Sgt. Hackbarth underwent an initial surgery today and will remain hospitalized for continued care.

"Justin is a valued member of our department known for his selfless commitment to public service," said Norman Chief of Police Kevin Foster. "We ask the community to keep Justin, his family, the medical professionals caring for him, and our entire team in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

Sgt. Hackbarth has served as a Norman police officer for more than ten years.

"We are standing firmly with Justin," said Chief Foster. "The outpouring of support from our community means more than we can express, and we remain hopeful that his unwavering strength will be a catalyst for his long-term recovery."

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Collision Reconstruction Team is actively investigating the collision.

NPD is grateful for the swift response and continued support of our local, county, and state partner agencies.
