Taos, N.M. - Under the expansive skies of Northern New Mexico, UNM-Taos recently celebrated a major milestone with the groundbreaking of the Cielo Centro amphitheater on Klauer Campus-the first step in creating a transformative space for education, culture, and community engagement.
Cielo Centro is envisioned as more than a collection of buildings. It will be a vibrant hub where art, science, and local heritage intersect, inspiring curiosity and opportunity for generations to come. The center will feature an amphitheater, observatory, classrooms, and outdoor learning spaces, all designed to connect students and the community to both the land and the stars.
"This project is about cultivating wonder and ensuring that young people in Northern New Mexico can see themselves not just looking at the stars, but working among them," UNM-Taos Chancellor Mary Gutierrez told the audience.
Key contributions and partnerships
The groundbreaking ceremony highlighted the story of Jacob Torres, a native of Northern New Mexico who worked on NASA's "Chiles in Space" project. His journey underscores the project's mission: to create pathways for local students to pursue careers in science and technology.
Looking ahead
When complete, Cielo Centro will serve as a hub for teaching, research, and cultural exchange-a place where the community gathers to celebrate, learn, and dream together.
"As we turn the soil today, we also turn our gaze upward-to what's possible when a community believes in its future," said Gutierrez. "Cielo Centro will open doors for students and generations to come."
