EUTAWVILLE, S.C. - August 13, 2026 - A living sentinel of American independence has received a second lease on life. Yesterday, master arborists from SavATree began a high-precision preservation project to restore the Eutaw Springs Witness Tree that has been slowly declining due to compacted soil, a lightning strike 50+ years ago and not receiving the proper care over the decades. The Witness Tree is a massive Live Oak estimated to be 300 years old that stood watch over the Battle of Eutaw Springs on September 8, 1781, one of the final and bloodiest engagements of the Revolutionary War's Southern Campaign.

The tree sits on a historic 4-acre parcel preserved by the American Battlefield Trust and South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust directly across from Eutaw Springs Battlefield Park, the exact ground where British forces pitched camp prior to the historic clash. As South Carolina and the nation continue celebrating America's 250th anniversary year following July's landmark Semiquicentennial milestone, the site is being transformed into an official historical park expansion and a featured stop along "The Liberty Trail," a statewide heritage tourism network. This transformation will be made possible through the efforts of a coalition of partners and significant funding support from the South Carolina 250 Commission (SC250).

A rigorous Tree Condition Assessment conducted by SavATree revealed that while the 72-inch trunk diameter oak remains in fair health, its survival was endangered by well-intentioned human intervention from half a century ago. Following a severe lightning split decades past, heavy iron chains and steel support cables were wrapped around the trunk. Over time, the growing oak swallowed the metal, leaving legacy hardware choked deep inside its vascular system between 5 and 15 feet above ground.

"Trees of this age are remarkably resilient, but they require precise, scientific care when historical repairs begin doing more harm than good," said Aron Landsaw, SavATree International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist with Tree Risk Assessment Qualification. "Our team scaled the canopy and carefully cut away choking steel chains, installed modern flexible support systems, and attached a full copper lightning protection array so this living piece of American history can thrive for another century."

To fund and execute the comprehensive care plan, the South Carolina 250 Commission (SC250) and the American Battlefield Trust formed a 50/50 public-private funding partnership, selecting SavATree as the exclusive arborist partner to carry out the restoration.

The multi-phase technical restoration executed by SavATree included:

• Canopy Surgery & Hardware Extraction: High-rigging teams scaled the 45-foot tree to remove deadwood and carefully relieve pressure from legacy chains fused into the bark.
• Storm & Structural Defense: Installed dynamic canopy cabling and a modern tree-lightning protection rod system to guard against severe weather.
• Critical Root Zone Revitalization: Utilized specialized Supersonic Air Tools (SSAT) to decompact suffocated soil around the 72-inch trunk without damaging delicate feeder roots, followed by custom bio-stimulant applications.
