EU–San Marino Association Agreement: Italy welcomes the green light from the Council of the European Union

Italy welcomes with great satisfaction today's green light from the Council of the European Union authorising the signature and provisional application of the Association Agreement between the European Union, the Republic of San Marino and the Principality of Andorra. This is a particularly significant achievement which enables the two European countries to forge closer ties with the EU through participation in the EU's internal market and the development and promotion of cooperation in areas of common interest, such as research and development, education, social policy, the environment, consumer protection, culture and regional cooperation.

This marks a significant and historic milestone in the rapprochement between the EU and San Marino. Italy views this outcome particularly favourably, not least in light of the unique nature of its bilateral relationship with the Republic of San Marino, which is founded on deep-rooted historical, cultural, economic and social ties and on a proximity that is reflected in day-to-day cooperation between institutions and local communities.

The entry into force of the Agreement will enable San Marino to benefit from closer integration with the European single market, fostering greater opportunities for businesses as well as new prospects for economic cooperation and innovation. Italy remains committed to continuing its cooperation with the San Marino authorities during the forthcoming implementation phase of the Agreement, so that the new framework for relations with the European Union may lead to concrete results and a strengthening of cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
