Marion Invites Community to Join in Celebration of America's 250th Anniversary; Two Special Events Happening this Weekend

The City of Marion is hosting a months-long celebration to honor America's 250th anniversary, bringing together local organizations, businesses and residents to commemorate this historic milestone.

"In marking our nation's 250th anniversary, we have an extraordinary opportunity to unite as a community and reflect on the history that shaped us," said Mayor Nick AbouAssaly. "I encourage residents, businesses and community organizations to join in this milestone celebration."

In Uptown Marion, firework-inspired flower displays are thriving, patriotic bunting is installed at the Depot Pavilion and the stars and stripes are projected on sidewalks after dark. This year, 80 military tribute banners are displayed on streetlights in recognition of veterans and active-duty service members, with additional U.S. flags lining the streets.

Building and business owners are encouraged to create patriotic window displays and storefront decorations, and residents are encouraged to take part by decorating their porches and entryways with patriotic flair. This fall, the community will be invited to be part of a tree planting event, where 250 trees will be planted to mark the occasion.

Two upcoming events are planned for this weekend to coincide with Flag Day.

Iowa Military Veterans Band Concert
This Saturday, June 13, the City of Marion is hosting a special performance by the Iowa Military Veterans Band at the Klopfenstein Amphitheater at Lowe Park, 4500 N. 10th Street, Marion. The band is comprised of musicians from throughout the state, representing all branches of the U.S. military. They will give a free one-hour concert of patriotic music starting at 6 p.m. Food vendors and activities will be available starting at 5 p.m.

America 250 Salute to the Flag
On Sunday, June 14, the Marion Heritage Center is hosting "America 250 Salute to the Flag" in the former library lot across from the museum, 1095 6th Avenue, Marion. Activities are planned from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. that day and include a Civil War re-enactment at 1 p.m., a concert by the Marion Community Band and a Parade of Flags at 2 p.m.
