Marcell, Kosierowski, Mayes Fertility Preservation Bill Passes Pennsylvania House

HARRISBURG - Legislation introduced by Reps. Kristin Marcell (R-Bucks), Bridget Kosierowski (D-Lackawanna) and La'Tasha Mayes (D-Allegheny) to require insurance coverage for certain fertility preservation services for cancer patients passed the Pennsylvania House yesterday by a vote of 172-31.

House Bill 2649 would require certain health insurance policies to cover standard fertility preservation services when a patient is undergoing medically necessary treatment that may result in infertility.

"For many people diagnosed with cancer, decisions about fertility preservation have to be made within days, before treatment begins," said Marcell. "There is no time to raise thousands of dollars, apply for a loan or spend weeks fighting an insurance denial. Patients should be able to focus on their treatment without having to give up the possibility of starting or growing a family later."

Cancer treatments including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery can damage reproductive organs or affect hormones, creating a risk of permanent infertility. Fertility preservation services can cost thousands of dollars and are not consistently covered by insurance. The legislation would require coverage for standard fertility preservation services for patients facing medically necessary treatment that may cause infertility.

"Surviving cancer should not mean losing the opportunity to have a family," said Marcell. "This bill removes a significant financial barrier at one of the most difficult points in a patient's life."

The measure now moves to the Senate for consideration.
