The Events That Matter Most For Chevron Stock

Chevron (CVX) stock has returned 54.0% over the past year, well ahead of the 15.3% return for the S&P 500, leaving current holders with a large gain to protect. On the July 31 call, management said Chevron expects to finish 2026 at the low end of its $18 billion to $19 billion capital budget. Since that call, Chevron has agreed to invest more than $7 billion in Venezuela over the next five years and to divest its interests in Hess Midstream and its DJ Basin crude midstream assets. Below are the events most likely to move Chevron stock over the next six months.

What to watch When Which way it cuts
Chevron finishes 2026 capital spending at the low end of its $18 billion to $19 billion budget fiscal year 2026 In its favor
Chevron's 2026 oil and gas production, estimated at 7% to 10% above 2025 at $60 Brent fiscal year 2026 In its favor
Affiliate distributions for 2026, guided at $6 billion at $70 Brent fiscal year 2026 In its favor
Chevron's fiscal Q3 and Q4 2026 results October 30, 2026 and January 2027 Either way
A closure of the CPC pipeline, after Black Sea activity tied to the Ukraine-Russia conflict no date stated Against the stock

Chevron's Next Two Earnings Reports

Chevron reports its third-quarter 2026 results on October 30, before the open, and its fiscal Q4 2026 results are expected in January 2027. These reports matter because Chevron's profit has swung hard in 2026, posting net income of $12.1 billion in fiscal Q2 2026 compared to $2.21 billion in fiscal Q1 2026.

On the July 31 call, management said adjusted upstream earnings from producing oil and gas rose from the first quarter on higher realized prices, larger volumes sold and favorable timing effects. Because prices and timing can turn either way from one quarter to the next, net income in the October 30 report is the figure to watch.

A Closure of the CPC Pipeline Route

One risk for Chevron carries no set date: a closure of the CPC pipeline. On the July 31 call, management said activity in the Black Sea tied to the Ukraine-Russia conflict had at times affected operations in the region over recent quarters. Even so, two of Chevron's three single point moorings (SPMs) there were in service, and the third was under refurbishment. Management also said the governments and companies relying on the pipeline were strongly committed to keeping it open.

The Black Sea route serves part of Chevron's international business, which produced nearly 2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in fiscal Q2 2026. Management has not specified the size of its alternative routes and said it does not intend to do so. Management's update on the CPC pipeline in the October 30 report is the detail to watch.

Cash From Chevron's Affiliates In 2026

Chevron expects $6 billion in distributions from its affiliates in 2026 at a Brent oil price of $70, guidance management affirmed on the July 31 call. Management added that Brent was likely to be higher than that in 2026, which would mean even larger payouts.

Most of the roughly $3 billion second-quarter payout came from Tengizchevroil (TCO), where output in each month of the quarter ranked among the highest management had seen. Affiliate distributions for 2026 are the number to watch when Chevron reports on October 30.

Can You Hold Chevron Stock Through These Dates?

The worst stretch for Chevron shares in the past year began on March 27, 2026, and ended on July 1, 2026, marking a 21.5% fall. The sharpest single-day decline during that period was a 4.6% drop on April 1, 2026.

That decline accumulated over 65 trading days rather than around a single report, and a fall of that size could happen again while you hold the stock. If a repeat would not push you to sell, you can keep your current stake. If it would, the stake is larger than you can hold through these dates.

Does This Mean You Should Act On CVX?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
