East-central Ga. brine operations update

Augusta, Ga. - Georgia Department of Transportation crews and contractors have made good progress treating east-central Georgia routes ahead of a winter storm forecast to impact the district on Saturday.

As of 10 a.m. Saturday, brine solution has been applied to about 80% of routes in our treatment plan. All state routes north of Interstate 20 have been treated. Crews finished treating I-20 and I-520 overnight. Crews will continue working throughout the day Saturday to treat state routes south of I-20.

Georgia DOT continues to monitor weather forecasts and road conditions. Crews are prepared to switch to salt and plow operations as needed.

Travel is strongly discouraged overnight. Ice accumulations may cause significant travel hazards. For safety reasons, Georgia DOT crews will not clear debris from the roadway until daylight arrives on Sunday.

To help mitigate potential issues involving stranded motorists, stalled vehicles, or crashes, HERO and CHAMP operators are conducting 24-hour patrols. Patrol efforts are primarily focusing on I-20 and routes northward.

Crews are staffed around the clock until the threat is over. All district maintenance personnel are working 12-hour shifts.

Please note, our plans are based on current weather reports and are subject to change.
