50kg of waste collected during the first clean-up
The 'Islands Cleanup' campaign has once again been launched by the Ministry for the Environment and Energy, in collaboration with the Saving Our Blue campaign, Project Green, and the Cleansing and Maintenance Division.
Following the success of previous years, the Islands Cleanup campaign continues to encourage organisations, NGOs, young people, and local communities to actively participate in initiatives that raise awareness of the importance of preserving Malta's marine ecosystems.
This year's campaign was launched at Pretty Bay in Birżebbuġa, where NGOs and individuals participated in cleanups at sea and on land. A total of 50kg of waste was collected, separated, and processed correctly.
"As this campaign enters another year, it is encouraging to see a growing number of organisations, NGOs, and young people joining the Islands Cleanup campaign. I encourage the public to get involved in these initiatives. I also appeal to the public to take care of our environment and dispose of waste responsibly," said Minister Dalli.
"Islands Cleanup is an activity we organise every year, and we always invite organisations as well as individuals to participate, because keeping our country clean should not be solely the responsibility of us as Government or of organisations, but should be everyone's responsibility through a national effort," said Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield.
This campaign is open to private companies, schools, non-governmental entities, and other organisations that wish to contribute to a better environment while also fulfilling part of their corporate social responsibility obligations.
Anyone who registers will receive all the equipment needed to carry out the work safely and efficiently. After each cleanup, the collected waste is weighed and separated in accordance with waste separation regulations, while recyclable material is sent for processing. Participants receive a certificate of participation.
