Jackson One of Four Jurisdictions in America to Receive Trump Administration Funding to Combat Crime

JACKSON, Miss. - Governor Tate Reeves today announced that the city of Jackson is one of four jurisdictions in America to receive an award through the Trump administration's nearly $300 million Model Cities Initiative to combat crime and restore law and order. As a result of this award from the Department of Justice, the city intends to use the funds to enhance the use of technology for faster deployment of law enforcement and stronger criminal investigations, and to conduct targeted preventive work to address recidivism and homelessness.

"Thank you to President Trump and Attorney General Blanche for choosing to invest in our crime fighting efforts in Jackson, Mississippi, with the awarding of this Model Cities Initiative grant from the Department of Justice," said Governor Tate Reeves. "I'm thankful Mayor Horhn and his team recognized the opportunity this grant affords our capital city, and I appreciate everyone who supported the effort!"

As part of the initiative, the DOJ "will work with each jurisdiction to finalize and implement its public safety plan. Funding will support a range of priorities, including hiring sworn and non-sworn law enforcement officers and other personnel to support enforcement, prosecution, and related public safety activities; adopting new and improved technology; purchasing or leasing equipment; enhancing forensic capabilities and capacity; and providing services to address mental health and substance use issues and reduce recidivism."

Attorney General Todd Blanche will visit Jackson in November to present the award.
