Combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life in Europe

Representatives of Jewish communities, national coordinators and special envoys on combating antisemitism, civil society organisations, governments, EU institutions, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) and equality bodies met in Vienna last week to discuss current challenges, Member States' actions and European Commission initiatives under the EU Strategy on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life.

The meeting was followed by the European Conference on Antisemitism, jointly organised by the Austrian Federal Chancellery, the European Commission and FRA. Discussions focused on implementing the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism, addressing online antisemitism and strengthening cooperation among national coordinators, special envoys and NHRIs.

Participants exchanged good practices and identified priorities for future action, including improving the monitoring and recording of antisemitic incidents, enhancing data collection, addressing emerging forms of online and AI-mediated antisemitism, reinforcing Holocaust education and strengthening cooperation with civil society and Jewish communities.

The conference concluded with remarks from Katharina von Schnurbein, European Commission Coordinator on Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life, Sirpa Rautio, FRA Director, Eva-Esther Sobotka, FRA Coordinator on combating antisemitism, and Antonio Martino, Austria's National Coordinator on combating antisemitism.
