WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (OR-06) celebrates the five-year extension of funding for the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award the study $44,456,682 to continue studying menopause and additional midlife factors that may contribute to women's health.
"Menopause affects every woman as they age, yet it has long been underresearched and underfunded, thus limiting our understanding of its impact on women's lives. Over the last three decades, SWAN researchers have made innovative breakthroughs in understanding how perimenopause and menopause can exacerbate mental health issues, bone loss, and sleep problems," said Salinas. "Regardless, more research is needed to understand its connection to long-term, life-threatening conditions, including strokes and Alzheimer's disease. I am proud that SWAN will receive full funding for the next five years to continue strengthening our understanding of women's health and to equip providers with the training and education they need to deliver quality care to their patients."
In December 2025, Salinas led thirty-three of her colleagues in sending a letter to the NIH urging continued funding for SWAN, a long-running, federally funded research study examining women's health during midlife and menopause.
SWAN is an epidemiologic study that began in 1994 to research the health of women as they enter their midlife years. The study aims to educate women and providers about how midlife transitions can affect women's health and to continue scientific research for future breakthroughs.
