The American Gas Association applauded both the Congress and the President for the passage and signing of a clean continuing resolution on Wednesday evening, reopening the government and continuing to fund critical programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP. The timing of funding for LIHEAP is particularly important as cold weather sweeps the country this week.
"A functioning federal government is critical to fueling American families and businesses. Programs like LIHEAP help protect customers in need, and with temperatures dropping this week, funding for this critical program is vital. Struggling families and seniors across the country will be relieved to know that critical assistance is available to help them pay their energy bills and weatherize their homes as winter kicks in," said American Gas Association President and CEO Karen Harbert. "Additionally, with the government funded, Congress can now get back to its other vital work, including passing permitting reform to end the gridlock on American energy infrastructure construction and enable an affordable, reliable and robust energy future for America's families and our economy."
LIHEAP helps customers in need with a variety of support, including energy bill assistance, equipment repair and replacement, weatherization support and more. Nearly 6 million households across the U.S. received assistance from LIHEAP in 2023. Find out more about how LIHEAP is helping customers here. A state-by-state resource directory created as a joint effort between the American Gas Association and the National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition is also available to help customers find programs that may be available to them.
