Linda Sue Vogt, whose generosity and steadfast support helped expand educational opportunities for Saint Louis University students, died June 14 at her home in Sunset Hills. She was 78.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Alan (CSB '69), her sister, extended family and many friends.
A dedicated philanthropist and longtime friend of the University, Linda Vogt believed in the transformative power of education and travel. Although she did not attend college herself, she made it possible for countless students to pursue opportunities she never had.
Her personal motto, "to the journey," was reflected in 2022, when she established the Linda Vogt Cultural Exploration Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to Billikens studying abroad.
While already longtime supporters of Billiken Athletics, Alan Vogt remembered that it was a simple conversation on their back patio that connected his wife with the students at SLU-Madrid and inspired her to create the fund that changed the lives of so many.
"My wish is that her inspiration to create this scholarship could inspire someone else to do the same thing and make their own difference for Saint Louis University, whether it be benefiting the Chaifetz School of Business, School of Medicine, research or Billiken Athletics," Alan Vogt said.
Having already benefited more than 150 SLU students, the scholarship reflected Linda Vogt's lifelong love of exploring and her belief that encountering different cultures broadens perspectives, builds understanding and changes lives. The couple visited more than 80 countries together, embracing new experiences and encouraging others to do the same.
In recognition of their extraordinary service and philanthropy, Saint Louis University awarded the Vogts honorary doctorates in 2021. They also received SLU's Bauman Sportsmanship Award and were inducted into the Billiken Hall of Fame in 2017.
A member of the University's DuBourg Society and a familiar face at men's basketball games for many years, Linda Vogt was known for her generosity, enthusiasm and genuine interest in students, making her a valued member of the SLU community.
"Linda Vogt exemplified an authentic generosity of spirit," said SLU President Edward Feser, Ph.D. "Kathy and I are grateful we had the opportunity to meet her many times and to witness the genuine love and support she extended to SLU students. Through her support for scholarships and countless everyday interactions, she demonstrated her commitment to helping students expand their dreams of what is possible and reach their full potential. Her legacy of kindness will endure in the lives of many."
Born in Charleston, Missouri, Linda Vogt built her professional career at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., where she met Alan Vogt, and Ralston Purina, where she spent 20 years.
Those who knew her remember her warmth, humility and unwavering belief in the potential of others, as well as her daily walks along Lindbergh Boulevard and her support of organizations dedicated to animal welfare and education.
"She made such an incredible difference in the lives of our Madrid students, helping them to embrace all that the world had to offer," said Vice President of University Development Sheila Manion. "We are deeply grateful for all that she has meant to the SLU community."
SLU Director of Athletics Chris May praised the Vogts for their steadfast support of our mission to serve Billiken student-athletes at the highest levels.
"We will miss Linda greatly and remember her fondly as the pep band plays "Sweet Caroline" at the end of Billiken wins," he said. "She lived life to the fullest, and we will continue her passion to help Billiken student-athletes to live life to the fullest as well."
A memorial celebration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 1 at Mike Duffy's Bar & Grill in Kirkwood, Missouri.
