PONTIAC, Mich. - Oakland County Prosecutor KAREN D. McDONALD charged Joseph Louis Carter, a 39-year-old resident of Detroit with Armed Robbery, Possession of a Firearm by Prohibited Person, two counts of Felony Firearm 2nd Offense.
On October 30, the defendant allegedly used an AK 47-style rifle to rob approximately $2,000 from the Shell station on Rochester Road in Troy. Law enforcement used security camera footage from the gas station and surrounding properties to identify the defendant's vehicle at the time of the robbery and locate him.
"More than simply a theft, armed robberies endanger retail employees and customers with a threat of violence," said Prosecutor McDonald. "This was not an easy case, but the diligent collaboration between Troy Police and the AFT allowed law enforcement to identify and apprehend this defendant. We now have the opportunity to hold him accountable for this crime."
Armed Robbery is punishable by any term of years in person up to life. Possession of a Firearm by Prohibited Person by up to 5 years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine. Felony Firearm 2nd Offense is punishable by 5 years in prison, with each count served consecutively with any other sentence.
Charges are accusations and individuals are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
