MALAYSIA ELECTED TO THE UNITED NATIONS ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL

COUNCIL (ECOSOC) FOR THE TERM 2027-2029

Malaysia has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2027-2029, at the elections held during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on 4 June 2026.

Malaysia obtained 184 votes of the 186 member states present and voting, securing the highest vote count. The election to ECOSOC is a resounding testament to the international community's trust in Malaysia's continued commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development and international cooperation.

As a member of ECOSOC, Malaysia will continue to contribute to the Council's work by advocating the interests of developing countries and working constructively with all stakeholders to advance balanced, inclusive and sustainable development.

This includes efforts to address multifaceted global challenges such as economic uncertainty, humanitarian crises, inequality, and the adverse impacts of climate change, alongside priorities on poverty eradication, financing for development, reform of the international architecture, food security, youth empowerment, quality education, affordable healthcare, and the well-being of vulnerable communities.

Malaysia has been a member of ECOSOC for seven separate terms before, namely 1971-1973; 1976-1978; 1983-1985; 1991-1993; 1995-1997; 2003-2005; and 2008-2010.

In today's challenging global landscape, the role of ECOSOC is more critical than ever in advancing international efforts to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and ensuring that no one is left behind.

As one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, ECOSOC serves as the central platform for coordinating the economic, social and related work of the UN system and its specialised agencies.
