Pathway Programs’ Participation Among U.S. MD-Granting Medical School Matriculants: A National Study

Pathway programs are part of the premedical journey for many medical school matriculants.

AAMC Matriculating Student Questionnaire (MSQ) data for academic years 2023-24 through 2025-26 examine pathway program participation among recent U.S. MD-granting medical school matriculants. The analysis found that 30.6% of MSQ respondents participated in at least one middle school, high school, or college pathway program, and about one in four participants had done so in multiple program types. About one in three pathway participants reported participating in a medical school-affiliated program, most often at a medical school other than the one they entered. The findings offer national benchmarking data and point to opportunities for collaboration, outreach, and future outcomes research.
