Employment in the tourism sector has exceeded 3 million registered workers following a 3% increase in June

In June, contributors linked to tourism activities increased in absolute terms by 87,830 people, reaching a total figure that slightly exceeds 3 million workers, according to data published by the Ministry of Tourism. This represents an increase of 3% compared to the same month last year. In relation to the labour market of the country as a whole, which grew 2.8% year-on-year this month, tourism employment accounts for 13.7% of the total number of contributors.

The number of contributors rose in the hospitality sector, with an increase of 49,825 (19,418 in accommodation services and 30,407 in food and beverage services). On the other hand, the situation in travel agencies was negative, with a fall of 1,719 employees.

It should be clarified, as stated in a footnote included in the technical data sheet linked at the end of this press release, that this figure does not reflect an actual decline, as it is influenced by changes made to the CNAE (National Classification of Economic Activities), which have reclassified certain activities previously categorised under 'travel agencies' into other categories.

Salaried employees grew 3.2%

In the first month of the year, the number of salaried employees in the tourism sector (accounting for 83.1%) increased 3.2% compared to the same month last year. By branch of activity, salaried employment decreased in travel agencies and tour operators (-1.6%) and increased in hospitality (2.8%), and within this sector, it increased 3.3% in accommodation services and 2.6% in food and beverage services.

Self-employment in tourism, which represents 16.9% of the total number of contributors, increased 1.8 %. The hotel and catering sector saw a 1.4% increase, driven by the growth in accommodation services (17.5%) and food and beverage services (0.1%). Travel agencies have seen a year-on-year decline of 4.3% in the number of self-employed workers, a fall that has also been influenced by the change in the CNAE classifications.

The Valencian Community, where employment is growing the most

In September, employment in hotels and restaurants and travel agencies/tour operators as a whole increased in all autonomous communities.

This month, both in absolute terms (9,556 contributors) and in relative terms (4.3%), the largest increase was recorded in the Valencian Community.
