French Street Special Improvement District Created to Increase Vibrancy

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (June 4, 2026) - There's plenty to offer on French Street and New Brunswick is poised to spotlight the corridor.

The City Council is establishing a Special Improvement District (SID) along the French Street business corridor to elevate public safety, enhance cleaning, and boost local marketing.

Projected to raise $360,000 annually, the SID will double funding for community programs, seamlessly replacing expiring state grants. The initiative is funded by a modest 0.28% assessment on commercial and large multifamily properties while exempting single-family homes and nonprofits.

The City expanded the district's new non-profit management board to include additional community seats, ensuring residents have equal representation alongside business and property owners.
