EU statement

Mr. Special Rapporteur,

The EU thanksfor your report and its focus on the nexus with gender equality.

Gender equality is a core value of the EU, enshrined in the Treaty on European Union and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. EU legislation aims to eliminate discrimination based on gender, ensure equal pay for work of equal value, promote work-life balance, as well as equal participation in decision-making processes, thus improving women's economic independence.

The EU is fully committed to achieving sustainable and inclusive development and implementing the SDGs and the UN's 2030 Agenda. The indivisibility, interdependence, universality and inalienability of all human rights is a cornerstone of the human rights system. The right to development, like all human rights, is universally applicable and should be enjoyed equally by all persons, including women and girls and other persons who have not benefitted equally from development.

The EU's commitment to gender equality and the full enjoyment of all human rights by all women and girls, is unwavering. We prioritise gender equality in our external relations and development cooperation. The EU supports women's rights and empowerment globally through advocacy, funding, and partnerships, aligning with international frameworks.

Mr. Special Rapporteur, in your report you recommend that States, international organizations, policymakers, businesses and other actors pay attention to the nexus between gender equality and the right to development. How do you see the Council's contribution in this regard?

Thank you.
