Leading prediction market platform looks to expand protections for its young adult traders
Kalshi has enhanced its responsible trading measures with the introduction of a new monthly deposit limit for 18-20-year-old traders.
Every account for 18-20-year-old traders will now be defaulted into a $2,500 monthly deposit limit.
In addition, when a new trader with a balance over $1000 puts more than 25 per cent of that balance in a single trade, Kalshi will show an alert encouraging them to diversify their trading.
These new features build on safeguards already in place for young adult traders. After their first trade, 18-20 year olds are shown tools to set limits on their time and money spent on the platform, along with confidential mental health support through Birches Health.
"Like the stock exchange, Kalshi is available only to traders 18 and older," said Kalshi co-founder and chief operating officer Luana Lopes Lara. "Still, we know that young adults are often new to markets and may need more education and safeguards, so we are expanding our protections for this group of users."
Kalshi has also entered into a partnership with parent and youth safety organizations, including Parent ProTech and ConnectSafely, to publish Parents' Guides to Prediction Markets.
"We're happy to work with Kalshi to help prevent minors from accessing prediction markets and to educate parents and other adults about the risks," said Larry Magid, CEO of ConnectSafely." Those risks go beyond losing money and can include compulsive trading, excessive screen time and risky financial behavior.
"Our goal is not just to keep kids off these platforms, but to help them develop the judgment to make informed decisions about money and risk now and as they grow older."
Parent ProTech co-founder & CEO Brock Murphy added: "Kids should not be on prediction markets, and we appreciate Kalshi supporting families in keeping it that way.
"Parents deserve clear, practical tools to keep their children off these platforms. This guide explains what prediction markets are in plain language and gives families simple steps to start the conversation and keep their kids safe."
