American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall urged House lawmakers this week to pass legislation to allow year-round sales of fuels blended with 15% ethanol, known as E15. The House of Representatives is scheduled to vote today on H.R. 1346, the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act, as reported from the Rules Committee.
"Farmers and ranchers across the country are facing rising costs, historically low crop prices and uneven global competition that threaten their livelihoods," President Duvall wrote in a letter to members of the House of Representatives. "Farmers need strong domestic markets that will help support long-term farm viability and grow rural communities."
Year-round E15 sales could increase demand for corn by up to 2.4 billion bushels a year, which would help raise struggling corn prices. America's drivers would also benefit from lower fuel prices. The letter continues, "E15 is typically 10 to 30 cents per gallon cheaper than regular gasoline, offers higher octane for improved engine performance, and reduces emissions. This would save consumers up to 18% at the pump."
