Large Cap Stocks At 52-Week Highs: Monday’s Full List

A short list of new highs presents a sharp contrast between profitability and rapid expansion.

Systems Software, Integrated Telecommunication Services, and Life Sciences Tools & Services each placed one name on Monday's list. As of Monday, September 14, there are 3 Large Cap US and Canada-listed stocks in the Trefis coverage universe trading at their 52-week highs. The largest is CrowdStrike (CRWD), with a market value of about $238.9 billion.

The small group reached these prices while the S&P 500 has returned -2.2% over the last month. Yet two of the three names operate at a loss. When a stock hits its highest price of the past year, does its profitability matter as much as its growth?

Every Name On The List

Here are all 3 names, sorted by market capitalization, with returns over four windows:

This screen covers US and Canada-listed stocks in the Trefis coverage universe. Large Cap here means a market value above $40 billion.

Which new high is backed by profit?

Only one. Verizon Communications (VZ) trades at 13.2 times trailing earnings, and its revenue grew 1.4% over the last twelve months, and its operating margin was 20.5%. The other two names show faster expansion but negative margins.

Natera (NTRA) had the strongest one-month run, up 10.0%. Its revenue grew 37.8% over the last twelve months, and its operating margin was -10.7%. CrowdStrike (CRWD) saw its revenue grow 24.3% over the last twelve months, and its operating margin was -2.2%.

A high price is a question, not an answer.

Strength often persists, and a stock making new highs is a sign of positive investor attention. But a price is not a verdict on the underlying business. A 52-week high is an invitation to look closer.

The disciplined move is to check whether the business fundamentals earn the level. A new high can signal a durable change in a company's prospects, or it can be a price that has run ahead of the numbers.

Before chasing any name on this list, ask what the company itself expects next. Our Guidance Momentum screen surfaces the stocks whose managements just raised their own outlooks.

New Highs Fade. Discipline Compounds

Some of the names on this list will keep setting highs for years, and some are at the top of their run right now. Sorting one from the other, name by name, every day, is the work most investors never keep up with.

That sorting is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does systematically: about 30 quality businesses screened for the fundamentals that sustain a run, held with rules instead of excitement. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, the S&P MidCap 400, and the Russell 2000. Use the high list for ideas; use the portfolio for the compounding.
