Pacific Environment applauds Singapore and the Republic of Korea announcement to establish a green and digital shipping corridor

SAN FRANCISCO - The Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Singapore and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the Singapore-Republic of Korea Green and Digital Shipping Corridor. The MOU was signed by Singapore's Acting Minister for Transport Mr. Jeffrey Siow, and his counterpart, Republic of Korea's Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Mr. Chun Jae Soo. Since 2010, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have maintained close cooperation under the Memorandum of Understanding on Maritime Safety Cooperation, holding regular bilateral meetings and pursuing various initiatives to advance the maritime industry and enhance safety.

"We extend our sincere congratulations to the Republic of Korea for achieving tangible outcomes through the Green Shipping Corridor. The Republic of Korea has consistently demonstrated strong will and dedication to advancing a cleaner and more sustainable maritime industry. We look forward to both nations further strengthening their cooperation and showing global leadership in expanding infrastructure and developing clean fuels on maritime decarbonization."

Under the MOU, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will explore and implement initiatives to support the maritime sector's transition to zero or near-zero greenhouse gas emission fuels. These include developing bunkering infrastructure, aligning technical standards, exchanging technical knowledge, conducting trials with industry and research partners, and providing joint training for maritime stakeholders. The MOU also aims to accelerate digitalization to enhance information exchange and operational efficiency.

"We congratulate the MPA for its steadfast commitment to advancing green shipping corridors. Such collaborative regional action is crucial toward meaningful decarbonization, particularly given the delay in the adoption of the Net-Zero Framework at the International Maritime Organization."

This collaboration reaffirms the strong commitment by Singapore and the Republic of Korea to accelerate the growth and deployment of clean maritime technologies, and to enhance efficiency and sustainability of global supply chains.
