UNM teacher preparation programs earn top marks for preparing future elementary reading teachers

Strong readers begin with strong teachers, and two University of New Mexico teacher preparation programs are being recognized nationally for helping future educators build the knowledge and skills needed to teach reading effectively.

The University of New Mexico College of Education & Human Sciences has earned top grades from the National Council on Teacher Quality's (NCTQ) 2026 Teacher Prep Review: Decoding Progress in Reading Preparation. The college's Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and the Graduate Certificate in Elementary Education with K-8 Licensure each received an A for their preparation of future elementary teachers in evidence-based reading instruction.

The recognition highlights programs that prepare aspiring educators to explicitly teach the five core components of reading using instructional practices grounded in decades of scientific research.

"Learning to read changes the course of a child's life," said Dean Kristopher M. Goodrich. "Preparing teachers who understand how children learn to read is one of the most important responsibilities we have as a college. This recognition reflects our commitment to ensuring every graduate enters the classroom ready to help students succeed."

According to NCTQ, the review evaluates how teacher preparation programs equip future elementary educators to teach foundational reading skills through coursework aligned with decades of reading research.

Programs earning top marks demonstrate that graduates receive comprehensive preparation in scientifically supported instructional practices before entering the classroom.

"This recognition reflects years of intentional work by our faculty to ensure future teachers understand not just what to teach, but how children learn to read," said Marjori Krebs, director of licensure. "Effective reading instruction changes lives, and we're committed to preparing educators who enter New Mexico classrooms with the knowledge and confidence to help every student become a successful reader."

Strong literacy instruction remains a statewide and national priority, making teacher preparation an essential part of improving educational outcomes. By emphasizing evidence-based reading instruction throughout its elementary education programs, the college is helping prepare educators who are equipped to support learners with a wide range of backgrounds, strengths and needs.
