Woman Faces Vehicular Homicide by Intoxication and Child Endangerment Charges

A woman faces vehicular homicide by intoxication and child endangerment charges after Tuesday's 3:30 p.m. single-vehicle crash at 13703 Old Hickory Boulevard that fatally injured her 11-year-old son.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a GMC Yukon, Elizabeth Sanchez, 49, was traveling east on Old Hickory Boulevard when she failed to negotiate a slight curve in the roadway. The vehicle crashed through a wooden fence and traveled through a field for approximately 300 yards before crashing into a drainage ditch. There were no signs of braking at the scene. Sanchez was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Her son, who was a backseat passenger in the Yukon, was taken to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Sanchez admitted to medical personnel that she had consumed beer. First responders reported that she had an odor of alcohol on her breath and person.

Sanchez will be arrested on the outstanding warrants upon her discharge from the hospital.
