(Portland, Ore., July 6, 2026) - U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Oregon State Director Jim Carmack celebrated the grand opening of a new fire station with the Idanha-Detroit Rural Protection Fire District. This new fire station was funded in part by a $2 million investment from USDA Rural Development.
"The opening of this new fire station marks a major step forward for disaster response in rural Oregon," said Carmack. "Built through years of community persistence and strengthened through Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins' commitment to rural America, this facility will help firefighters respond faster, protect more families, and safeguard the region for years to come."
Idanha-Detroit Rural Fire Protection District is an all-volunteer fire district located along Highway 22 in Oregon. The fire station has been under construction for some time and is a priority project for the communities it serves as this rural area is heavily forested and has been through significant wildfire events. The new station will allow four response staff to comfortably stay in the station for long shifts, holds a large meeting and training room, and includes five apparatus bays to house all equipment in a central location.
"As a former fire fighter, I truly enjoy the opportunities I often have supporting local communities with USDA funding to build new fire stations or purchase much needed equipment," said USDA Rural Development Oregon Community Programs Director Drew Davis. "Fire stations and those who serve in them are so often the hub of rural communities, especially in times of public need."
"It is rewarding to support a community that faced such tremendous loss in the 2020 Labor Day Fires, including the destruction of one of the district's fire stations," said USDA Rural Development Oregon Community Programs Specialist Holly Halligan. "This new facility will protect and serve residents and visitors of the North Santiam Canyon for generations."
This project is funded through USDA's Community Facilities Programs , which offer funding for public service buildings to improve the quality of life in rural America. USDA's financial support enhances the competitiveness of rural communities to attract and retain businesses that provide employment and services for residents.
