Marion Police Department Issues Update Related to Officer-Involved Shooting

The Marion Police Department is providing an update regarding the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Feb. 4, 2026, in the 4100 block of Deer Valley Drive.

The State of Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has completed its independent investigation. Furthermore, the Office of the Attorney General of Iowa has completed its review of this incident and concluded that the use of deadly force by officers involved in the Feb. 4, 2026, officer-involved shooting was legally justified.

Officer Spenser Hartman, a 10-year veteran of the Marion Police Department, and Officer Alex Greene, a two-year veteran, were the responding officers. As with all members of the Marion Police Department, both officers have completed the state-mandated basic and annual training required for mental health emergencies and crisis intervention, as outlined in the Iowa Code and the standards of the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). Additionally, Officer Hartman has completed an intensive 40-hour Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) program, a specialist designation for assisting individuals in mental health crisis that significantly exceeds the state's required training hours.

The officers involved remain on administrative assignment. Employees may be placed on an administrative assignment following critical or traumatic on-duty incidents to support their recovery and overall well-being. Additionally, the Marion Police Department will conduct an administrative review of the use of force as outlined in the department's Use of Force policy.

All department policies are reviewed internally on a regular basis. Building on this commitment, the department launched a comprehensive, independent review of all policies on Dec. 1, 2025. This is a department-wide initiative and a key step in pursuing national law enforcement accreditation, ensuring that Marion Police Department operations meet the highest standards of modern policing.

The City of Marion and the Marion Police Department mourn the loss of life and all who have been impacted by this situation.

The Police Department reminds residents of the resources available in times of mental health crisis.

  • Foundation 2 Crisis Services provides 24/7 phone support and community-based programs. The City of Marion partners with Foundation 2 to employ a full-time mental health clinician as a member of the Police Department.
  • The Linn County Mental Health Access Center is open for walk-ins 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No appointment is necessary.
  • The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is another related resource that can provide assistance 24 hours a day via phone or text.
