The 2026 soybean crop has generated discussion around Soybeans of Other Colors (SBOC) with some soybean producing regions seeing a more frequent than usual occurrence of seedcoat color variation. The SBOC designation is not a grade determining standard, but it can still affect class which has the potential to impact export shipments and warehouse inspections.
Exports
Soybeans that otherwise meet the requirements for U.S. No. 2 Yellow Soybeans but contain more than 10 percent SBOC would be classified as U.S. No. 2 Mixed Soybeans. This distinction may affect export shipments and contractual requirements.
Licensed Warehouse Inspections
Given SBOC and other grain quality challenges in some areas of the state, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) Grain Warehouse Bureau is recommending the following actions for licensed grain warehouses:
Licensed grain warehouses issuing warehouse receipts to farmers also should ensure the correct grade/receipt is representative of the grain delivered. View Iowa Code Chapter 203C for regulatory details.
Additional Resources
The Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) Video Library released a new SBOC instructional training video. The video is produced for officially licensed inspectors but may also be useful for AAI members to help with additional understanding of SBOC.
AAI Monitoring the Issue
AAI is working with the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA), IDALS, and other agricultural organizations to monitor this issue and determine whether additional action is needed.
