Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Tourism Management Natalie Semley has been appointed Head of Professional Development on the board of the Tourism Management Institute (TMI), the UK's leading professional body for destination management.
The appointment marks the latest step in a long-standing relationship between Natalie and the organisation. She first joined the TMI as a student member in 2002 and has spent more than two decades contributing to its work, helping strengthen connections between tourism education and industry practice.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to take on this role," Natalie said. "The TMI has been part of my professional journey for many years, and it's a real privilege to now support the organisation as a member of the board."
Over the years, Natalie has played an active role in shaping the institute's professional development work. She joined the TMI's continuing professional development (CPD) working group in 2012, supporting initiatives that help tourism professionals build skills and share knowledge across the sector.
Her contributions were recognised in 2018 when she was awarded Fellowship of the Tourism Management Institute, an honour given to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field and to the organisation itself.
More recently, Natalie joined the TMI's Sustainability Working Group in 2023, reflecting her commitment to helping tourism destinations respond to environmental and social challenges.
In her new role as Head of Professional Development, Natalie will help guide how the organisation supports learning, collaboration and knowledge exchange across the tourism sector.
"I'm looking forward to working with the board and wider TMI membership to strengthen connections across the sector," she said. "Destination managers and tourism professionals face complex challenges, and creating spaces for discussion, learning and collaboration is more important than ever."
