President Boakai Welcomes Restoration of Damaged Mount Coffee Turbine, As Plant is Restored to Full Capacity

The restoration of the turbine marks a major milestone for Liberia's energy sector, as the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant has now returned to its full installed generating capacity of 88 megawatts and is operating at full capacity.

Speaking during activities surrounding the commissioning of the 20-megawatt Solar Photovoltaic Plant at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Complex on Friday, June 5, 2026, President Boakai described the rehabilitation as a significant achievement that strengthens the country's electricity generation capacity and supports ongoing efforts to provide reliable and affordable power to Liberian homes, businesses, and institutions.

The President noted that the restoration demonstrates the Government's efforts at improving critical infrastructure and ensuring that strategic national assets are maintained to serve the needs of the Liberian people.

The turbine sustained damage in 2021, reducing the plant's output by approximately 22 megawatts and affecting overall electricity generation.

Following extensive rehabilitation work, engineers successfully restored the unit, enabling the facility to resume full operations.

With the hydropower plant back to its full 88-megawatt capacity and the addition of the newly commissioned 20-megawatt solar facility, Liberia has taken another important step toward expanding access to electricity, strengthening energy security, and diversifying its renewable energy sources.

President Boakai commended the Liberia Electricity Corporation, development partners, engineers, and technicians whose efforts contributed to the successful restoration of the turbine and the continued advancement of the nation's energy infrastructure.
