On October 17, 2025, Commissioner Maffei was a panelist at the Maritime Law Association's Fall 2025 General Meeting at the InterContinental Wharf.
The panel presentation was titled "Multimodal in the Modern Era: Shipping Act Developments and the Federal Maritime Commission." Commissioner Maffei was joined by other panelists, including U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB) Member Karen Hudlund; Jeff Vogel, Vice President of Legal, TOTE Services, LLC; and Wayne Rohde, Member, Cozen O'Connor. The panel was moderated by Carl Bentzel, President of the National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE).
In his comments, Commissioner Maffei emphasized the importance of all facets of the supply chain working together, particularly ocean carriers and intermodal rail. He discussed the importance of collaboration among the FMC, STB, and the U.S. Department of Transportation to ensure cargo can be transported smoothly from origination to destination.
Commissioner Maffei also expressed his support of the Trump Administration's efforts to revitalize the domestic maritime industry.
"It is high time for the U.S. to have a real place at the table when it comes to commercial maritime industry - both in terms of building new ships and in terms of having U.S. based companies running at least one major shipping line," said the Commissioner. "President Trump deserves bipartisan support for his initiatives to encourage more U.S. participation in international ocean shipping and bring back the commercial shipbuilding industry in America."
