As Hunger Action Month ends, Oklahoma State University's Basic Needsis working to combat food insecurity and ensure students have the resources they need to thrive while at OSU.

While the campus community showed incredible support throughout September, the work of helping students meet their fundamental needs continues year-round.

The need for these resources on campus is both real and widespread. According to a recent survey, 53.8% of OSU students experienced some level of food insecurity, up from 49.7% in 2022, and at a rate that is 11.5% higher than the national average among 48 other institutions. Food insecurity is defined as not having enough to eat or not knowing where your next meal is coming from. At OSU, the Basic Needs program is a vital lifeline for these students, providing them with a secure, no-cost way for them to access a supplemental food pantry.

The program's flagship resource, Pete's Pantry, has seen a steady increase in usage, with more than 3,000 students served each academic year. The pantry is a discreet and welcoming space found in the Student Union basement (SU 042). It's stocked with food items to serve as a resource that helps fill gaps and stretch a grocery budget.

"Life happens, and we all face struggles," said an anonymous student who's utilized the pantry. "I recommend the Basic Needs resources because they lend a helping hand to those in need, all while helping by giving us access to things we may not have access to elsewhere. Along with this, the volunteers are so kind and are ready to help you out when needed."

Beyond the pantry, the Basic Needs program provides a holistic approach to student wellness. The team serves as a vital resource hub, connecting students to various campus support services. Their work helps to live out the Cowboy Code, demonstrating a commitment to supporting the OSU family from all angles.

"Every student deserves the opportunity to focus on their studies without worrying about where their next meal will come from," said Brian Blevins, coordinator of Basic Needs. "Hunger Action Month is a great reminder, but our mission is something we live out every day. We are here to support our students so they can focus on what matters most: their academic and personal success."

The Basic Needs program cannot accomplish this mission alone. The work is made possible by the generosity of the OSU community through donations and student volunteer efforts. For those who want to help, you can make a financial donation to the OSU Foundation Food Insecurity Fundor volunteer your time by visiting the program's GivePulsepage. For any student who needs support, know that the Basic Needs team is here to help you get connected with the resources you need.
