Meritus supports student health through school-based health centers

On-site healthcare services offered at Western Heights and South High.

As in past school years, Meritus Health continues to support the health and well-being of local students through its School-Based Health Centers located at Western Heights Middle School and South Hagerstown High School. The centers provide convenient, on-site healthcare services that help students stay healthy, remain in class, and receive timely medical attention when they need it.

Staffed by a certified registered nurse practitioner and a nurse, the School-Based Health Centers offer healthcare services during the school day for enrolled students. Care is available regardless of a family's income, insurance status, or ability to pay, and services are coordinated with the student's existing healthcare provider.

The centers can evaluate and treat a variety of common illnesses and conditions, including sore throats, ear infections, colds, bronchitis, asthma, allergies, skin rashes, poison ivy, and urinary tract infections. Medication may also be prescribed or administered when appropriate.

"Our School-Based Health Centers are an important part of Meritus Health's commitment to improving the health of our community," said Beth Fields Dowdell, DNP, CRNP, director of Community Health and Outpatient Care Management at Meritus Health. "When students have convenient access to quality healthcare at school, they can receive timely treatment, return to the classroom more quickly, and focus on learning. We are proud to partner with local schools and community organizations to ensure every student has access to the care they need, regardless of their circumstances."

Meritus School-Based Health Centers are operated through a collaborative partnership between Meritus Health, Washington County Government, Washington County Public Schools, and the Maryland Department of Health.

Parents and guardians who would like their child to access services must complete an enrollment form. For additional information, contact the School-Based Health Centers at 301-766-8986 or 301-766-8795.
