Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz and Chief Growth Officer Brandon Sehlhorst announced the 2026 Vibrancy Initiative grant awards, supporting 19 redevelopment projects across 10 Toledo neighborhoods. The awards will help catalyze an estimated $13.5 million in commercial building improvements, enhancing storefront appearances, reactivating long-vacant spaces, and creating tenant-ready commercial opportunities throughout the city.
Thanks to support from Toledo City Council, the Vibrancy Initiative received $630,000 in funding in 2026. The Department received a total of 82 applications across the initiative's three programs and selected 19 projects for funding based on established evaluation criteria and recommendations from the Vibrancy Incentive Review Committee.
"The Vibrancy Initiative is helping turn long-vacant spaces into new opportunities for Toledo neighborhoods. These 19 projects represent more than construction and building improvements, they represent local investment, small business growth, and renewed pride in our commercial corridors. By making strategic investments in the places people see and use every day, we're building the kind of vibrant, connected neighborhoods that will help Toledo grow and attract more residents in the years ahead," Mayor Kapszukiewicz said.
Launched in 2021, the City's Vibrancy Initiative is a coordinated suite of incentive programs designed to stimulate revitalization, reduce blight, preserve existing structures, and strengthen commercial corridors citywide. The initiative includes the Façade Improvement Grant, White Box Grant, and Planning Grant programs. To date, the initiative has invested in 100 projects, leveraging over $135 million of private sector investment throughout Toledo's neighborhoods and commercial corridors.
"The strong response to this year's funding round demonstrates both the momentum building across Toledo's neighborhoods and the continued demand for strategic reinvestment tools like the Vibrancy Initiative," Brandon Sehlhorst, Chief Growth Officer for the City of Toledo, said. "As we enter the sixth year of the program, we are excited to support 19 projects that will help reactivate storefronts, strengthen commercial corridors, and create more vibrant places for residents, businesses, and visitors."
