On Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) marked the significant milestone of swearing in 22 new police officers-the largest single group of hires in more than 25 years. The last comparable hiring event occurred on February 15, 1999.

The ceremony reflects PPB's intensified focus on rebuilding its ranks following years of declining staffing. In recent months, PPB's Recruitment Unit developed a comprehensive strategy aimed at revitalizing hiring efforts. That work is beginning to show results.

"This is a memorable day for the Portland Police Bureau," said Chief Bob Day. "We are finding exceptional individuals to serve the communities of Portland."

The recruitment initiative included multiple layers of outreach and infrastructure upgrades, including new advertising campaigns, a social media effort highlighting current officers, and an updated communications platform to allow real-time engagement between recruiters and applicants. PPB has also refreshed its customer service approach to better support candidates throughout the hiring process.

The new hires are part of a broader push by PPB to increase its staffing levels while maintaining high standards for training and readiness. PPB reports its training program remains among the most comprehensive on the West Coast and continues to evolve alongside advancements in technology and policing best practices.

As part of ongoing recruitment efforts, PPB has recently expanded its Recruitment Unit to improve outreach efforts locally and nationally. Personnel Sergeant Brad Yakots noted that PPB's hiring model emphasizes individual preparedness and values-driven service.

"If you are a potential candidate who is fit to serve as a Portland Police officer, we want to hear from you," Yakots said. "You are competing only against yourself in our selection process."

In addition to programmatic improvements, PPB has introduced logistical support for applicants, including relocation incentives and a more streamlined hiring timeline, which the Bureau says now averages around five months.

PPB will host its next Hiring Workshop on October 11, offering prospective candidates a chance to learn more about the application process and complete the physical abilities test.
