This week, I had the joy of joining the incredible students and staff at Booker T. Washington Community Service Center's Freedom School for Harambee. Together, we read Equality's Call: The Story of Voting Rights in America and celebrated the power of young people to learn, lead and help shape the future of our Democracy.

The students filled the room with songs, smiles and boundless optimism-a powerful reminder of the promise within every child. When we nurture their curiosity, encourage their dreams and ensure they have every opportunity to succeed, we strengthen the future of our communities and our country. Our mission has always been, and will always be, For The Children.

Protecting the Right to Vote
This week marked 61 years since President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law-enacting a pillar of American civil rights and advancing our nation's fundamental promise that every citizen has a voice in our Democracy. For generations, this landmark law has helped protect Americans from discrimination at the ballot box and safeguard the sacred right to vote.

Yet, from the courts to the Congress, Republicans have repeatedly fought to gut the Voting Rights Act and weaken its protections. We must honor the generations of courageous Americans who fought, marched and sacrificed for voting rights by carrying their work forward. It is past time to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and ensure the right to vote is protected for generations to come.

Failing Working Families

Donald Trump promised a golden age. Instead, his reckless economic policies are destroying jobs, driving up costs and devastating working families. Today's disastrous jobs report, showing employers cutting jobs and previous months' hiring revised sharply downward, is the latest evidence of an economy moving in the wrong direction.

The American people deserve an economy that rewards work, creates good-paying jobs and lowers costs for families. Instead of policies that put working people last, we must build an economy that expands opportunity, strengthens the middle class and gives every family the chance to succeed.
