Modesto, CA, April 20, 2026 - Modesto, CA - Continuing a legacy of service, the City of Modesto is excited to announce the appointment of Interim Fire Chief Shanon Evans as the new Fire Chief of the Modesto Fire Department. Chief Evans brings in over three decades of dedicated fire service experience with a strong focus on community-centered leadership.
"Chief Evans has risen through service from volunteer firefighter to Interim Fire Chief," says City Manager Joe Lopez. "He has an enduring commitment to leadership, training, and ongoing support to strengthen fire service delivery across our community and our region."
Serving as Interim Fire Chief since December of 2025, Chief Evans has held key roles throughout his career, from his early days as a volunteer firefighter with the Westport Fire District to joining the Modesto Fire Department in 2001. During his tenure with Modesto Fire, he progressed through the ranks as a Relief Firefighter, Engineer, Captain, Battalion Chief, and Deputy Chief. He was also responsible for overseeing contracts and administrative services for the Cities of Oakdale and Turlock.

"I have great pride in representing the members of the Modesto Fire Department and our contract agencies. I look forward to continued success and partnership working with staff on our efforts to safeguard life and property in our community."
Known as a dedicated mentor and leader, Chief Evans focused on being a champion for developing and preparing the next generation of fire service professionals. He spent several years working closely with probationary firefighters and volunteer firefighters through training, mentorship, and career development opportunities.
Looking ahead, Chief Evans will focus on delivering high-quality service to our community and continuing to build the foundation of our command staff. He will prioritize providing efficient emergency medical services to our community and guide the success and stability of our contract agencies.
Chief Evans has been married to his wife Heidi for 28 years, has 4 children, Colton, Fallon, Dason, and Gannon, and his first granddaughter, Collins. His family has been a constant source of support throughout his career, and each of his children has followed in his footsteps by pursuing careers in emergency services, including fire service and nursing.
The Modesto Fire Department remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the lives and property of over 435,000 residents across Modesto, Ceres, Oakdale, Knights Ferry, Valley Home, Riverbank, Empire, Waterford, La Grange, Turlock, and Salida.
