Proposed increase of nearly $17.3 million would raise average residential bills by about $26 per month; Commission opens formal review and public input process
HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) voted today to suspend and investigate a rate increase request filed by UGI Utilities Inc. - Electric Division (UGI Electric), which provides electric distribution services to approximately 63,000 customers in Luzerne and Wyoming counties.
The Commission voted 5-0 to open the formal investigation into the request, which was filed on March 27, 2026.
UGI's Rate Increase Request
The changes proposed by UGI Electric would produce an annual overall revenue increase of nearly $17.3 million (about 11.9%) - and would result in the total monthly bill for a residential customer, using 1,000 kilowatt hours per month, increasing from $200.50 to $226.23 (12.8%).
PUC Rate Investigation
Today's action by the Commission suspends the rate increase request for up to seven months, and the case will now be assigned to the PUC's Office of Administrative Law Judge (OALJ) for an investigation and recommended decision.
The OALJ's investigation will include public input hearings to gather testimony from concerned consumers and interested stakeholders. Dates, times, and locations for those hearings will be detailed in future PUC press releases.
Customers are encouraged to follow the case and learn more about how to participate in the ratemaking process through resources available on the PUC's website.
A final decision by the Commission on this rate increase request is due by Jan. 1, 2027.
