Mayor Gloria Statement On Immigration Enforcement Near John Marshall Elementary School

SAN DIEGO - Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statement regarding federal immigration enforcement activity near John Marshall Elementary School:

"I am angered and deeply disturbed by the senseless ICE enforcement actions that took place yesterday near John Marshall Elementary School. No parent should have to fear being separated from their family simply for dropping their child off at school.

"Actions like these inflict fear and trauma far beyond those who are detained. Children are left wondering whether their parents will come home. Families may become afraid to take their children to school. And educators are forced to help children navigate fear and uncertainty that no child should have to experience.

"This is cruel, unnecessary and counterproductive. It does nothing to make our communities safer.

"I join Superintendent Bagula and our local leaders in condemning these tactics. I am calling on the Department of Homeland Security to provide stronger oversight and accountability for ICE enforcement actions, and I demand that ICE stop conducting enforcement operations at or near our schools during arrival and dismissal times.

"The impact of these actions extends far beyond one family. They undermine our schools, traumatize children and educators, and create fear and uncertainty throughout our communities and across our city.

"San Diego stands with our immigrant families. Our schools should be places where children feel safe, learn and simply get to be kids - not places where they fear their families could be torn apart."
