SUPPLEMENTAL LOOSE LEAF COLLECTION STARTS NOVEMBER 3

(Charleston, W. Va.) - The City of Charleston Public Works Department will start Supplemental Loose Leaf Collection-an extra service that helps remove leaves from neighborhoods, weather permitting-on Monday, November 3, 2025.

Residents can choose one of two ways to get rid of leaves:

  1. Bag your leaves and place them at the curb on your regular trash day.
    1. There's no limit on the number of bags.
    2. Bagged leaves are collected every week, just like regular trash.
  2. Rake your loose leaves to the edge of the street for Supplemental Loose Leaf collection.
    1. Leaf volume and weather conditions affect how long it takes crews to get through an area.
    2. Residents can expect leaves to be collected once or twice during the season, weather permitting.
    3. Leaves should not be raked into alleyways.

Why "Supplemental"?
This collection is an extra service provided by the Public Works Department - not a weekly scheduled pickup. The same trucks used for leaf collection are also used for snow removal. When winter weather hits, leaf collection pauses while crews switch equipment. If winter weather is prolonged, leaf collection will end for the season so crews can focus on snow and ice removal.

If you want guaranteed weekly pickup, bag your leaves and set them out with your trash.

Collection Areas (weather permitting)
Monday-Tuesday: Kanawha City
Wednesday-Thursday: South Hills
Friday: West Side, North Charleston, East End
Saturday: West Side, North Charleston, East End (as staffing allows)

While crews may be in an area on a certain day, it does not mean leaves will be collected at every residence in that area on that day.

Why Leaf Collection Matters
Removing leaves helps keep them out of storm drains and ditch lines - preventing clogs, localized flooding, and infrastructure damage.

In Summary
Bagged leaves - picked up weekly on trash day, no limits.
Loose leaves - collected once or twice a season, weather permitting.
