SWEDEN, ME - Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks at the dedication and open house for the new Sweden Fire Station. Senator Collins was joined at the event by Sweden Fire Chief Tim Cook, Deputy Fire Chief Tommie McKenzie, Sweden Select Board Chair Kerry Welton, members of the Sweden Fire Department, town officials, and local residents.
"Here in Maine, one of our greatest needs is replacing or renovating obsolete public safety facilities," said Senator Collins during her remarks. "This new station replaces a building from the 1800s, once a general store, that lacked adequate storage, running water, and dedicated space for Sweden's brave volunteer firefighters. I am so pleased that the new station we celebrate today addresses those longstanding deficiencies and will better serve this rural community."
Following her remarks, Senator Collins presented an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to Chief Cook in honor of the new station.
Senator Collins secured $1.15 million through her role on the Senate Appropriations Committee to support the construction of the new fire station. The new facility includes ample space for equipment and storage, multiple restrooms with showers, a kitchen area, and decontamination equipment. The new station is also the first in the State of Maine equipped with illuminated fire engine bay guide lines that are automated in connection with each of the station's overhead doors.
