Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held bilateral talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on October 31 during her trip to the Republic of Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. This marked her first meeting with the Chinese leader since she took office as prime minister.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait to Japan and the international community. She also expressed deep concern about the situation in the East China Sea and the intensification of Chinese military activities near Japan, demanding that China properly address these issues.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung welcomes and affirms the Japanese government's pertinent statements to the Chinese side conveying its continued high regard for Taiwan Strait security.
In recent years, Japan has on many occasions emphasized its deep concern over the security of the Taiwan Strait and the region during interactions with China, including the Japan-China leaders' meeting at the APEC summit in November and the Japan-China foreign ministers' meeting in Beijing in December in 2024, as well as the Japan-China foreign ministers' meeting in Tokyo in March and the Japan-China foreign ministers' meeting during the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in July in 2025. This demonstrates Japan's firm support for peace across the Taiwan Strait.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the concrete actions that the international community continues to take to safeguard security across the Taiwan Strait. Looking ahead, Taiwan will further enhance its self-defense capabilities, build whole-of-society defense resilience, and work closely with friendly countries and allies to jointly ensure the freedom, openness, peace, and prosperity of Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region.
