Ranking Member Markey Condemns Trump’s Attacks on American Manufacturers at Small Business Committee Hearing

RM Markey: 80,000 manufacturing jobs lost due to Trump's reckless economic policies

(Washington, May 13) - Ranking Member Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today highlighted the important role of manufacturing in Massachusetts-the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution-and condemned the Trump administration's relentless attacks on America's small manufacturers at a hearing titled "America 250: Industrialization and the Rise of Small Manufacturers." The Trump administration's reckless economic policies have created a full-blown affordability crisis, driving up costs and eliminating tens of thousands of jobs for small manufacturers. In Massachusetts and across the country, manufacturers face skyrocketing input costs due to President Trump's chaotic tariff taxes and are forced to contend with skyrocketing oil and gas prices because of Trump's illegal war in Iran.

"Despite the President's outlandish promises, we have lost 80,000 manufacturing jobs since he took office, job openings with manufacturers are down ten percent, and Trump's tariff taxes are making it harder and harder for small manufacturers to compete," said Ranking Member Markey. "Trump's policies have not brought a new golden age; instead, he has brought about the industrial-era gilded age of robber barons, bloated ballrooms, inequality, and political corruption. If we are serious about creating good manufacturing jobs, we must end Trump's affordability crisis. We must end Trump's tariff taxes; we must protect our workers; and we must address Trump's crushing costs."

The hearing follows a previous Small Business Committee hearing titled "American Entrepreneurship for 250 Years: Driving Innovation, Growth, and Opportunity," during which Ranking Member Markey highlighted the importance of immigrant workers and entrepreneurs to the economic success of Massachusetts and the country. The Bay State is home to more than 91,000 immigrant entrepreneurs and a total of 730,000 small businesses.
